The ACI – Financial Markets Association organised a lively and topical debate on in or out for Europe. The proposers and seconders for each side were heavyweights. We had Brendan Bradley, a Member of the Eurex Executive Board and Chief Innovations Officer. Ruth Lea CBE is Economic Advisor at Arbuthnot Banking Group. The Rt. Hon. John Redwood has been Member of Parliament for Wokingham since 1987 and member of the Cabinet from 1993-1995 and we remember he stood for Conservative Party Leader in 1995 and in 1997. Tim Skeet is a Senior Advisor to ICMA. The debate was moderated by David Buik MBE the popular TV pundit.
the event was hosted in Portcullis House, the offices of MPs outside the Palace itself. I had not been before. It is a terrific newish building above Westminster tube station. It looks like a great place to work. It was full of policemen, some with machine guns but most with a coffee and a bag of crisps. A great place for politician watching.
Thank you to the ACI for organising the Square Mile Debate once again and all the sunshine.
Although this was not the theme of the Square Mile Debate, I think the Out campaign has been forced to narrow its argument to immigration. It has lost the economic debate. Obama squashed the sovereignty argument. We cannot go it alone. Much of the argument about immigration is factually unsound. While there is intense fear and loathing amongst Daily Mail readers, the rest of us love our multi-cultural country and realise we are very short of hard working, young tax payers to support the burgeoning old population. We need more. They come and they want to work. Yes, there are people who do not want to integrate and spread hatred of the very hands that feed them. It will be relatively easy to deal with them rather than become an unwelcoming and spiteful race. Cheers.
